Words I've Run Into

fissiparous in an article at The Atlantic Vestal Vespa pointed out.

obloquy strikes me as at least a good scrabble word. Ran across it in Charlotte Macleod's Rest Ye Merry, almost a Christmas tradition with me. I admire Peter Shandy as one of the first Warriors Against Christmas.

Homeland Security the New Homework Eating Dog

Okay, I fell for this one. I bet a lot of people did. It didn't make sense for Mao's Little Red Book to be the focus of Homeland Security attention, but so many things don't make sense these days that not making sense almost lends more credibility to any claim.

Student recants on Homeland Security diverted Mao's handbook story. It says in the article that the student's motives are unknown and hints that it might have been an attempt to get attention/popularity. As the title to this post suggests, I just wonder if it's the 21st century form of an excuse as old as homework.
